Comedones: causes of appearance and how to deal with them?
Unwanted black and white spots do not just disappear from the face. But if you put in the effort, know the etymology, understand the origins of these imperfections, and realize how to fight them, it is possible to remove them from the skin for a lifetime.
What are comedones and why do they appear on the skin?
Comedones are pores or hair follicles that have been blocked by bacteria, sebum, and dead skin cells, resulting in bumps on your skin. They usually do not become inflamed, but they can be painful.
Comedones can be:
-
Open (also known as blackheads) – these are plugs in the ducts of sebaceous glands. When oxidized, the thick skin secret darkens and looks like a dark spot.
-
Closed – these are cavities within the skin filled with keratinized cells and sebaceous secretions. When inflamed, they turn red and then develop into painful pustules filled with pus.
A tendency to develop comedones is possible if other people in your family have a history of comedonal breakouts. Hormonal fluctuations also increase the chances of developing comedones.
How to fight comedones?
Comedones are among the easiest types of acne to treat. They are located close to the surface of the skin and respond well to over-the-counter topical medications. To address the appearance of unwanted blemishes on the face, you can choose products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and use them to treat comedones.
Before choosing products, consult a specialist. A qualified doctor will select the necessary treatment plan for you.
For cleansing, you can use the Clozac Face Wash, or cleansing products with benzoyl peroxide. Among the Elegant Group line, the following skin cleansing products are available:
-
Perolite Soap, which contains benzoyl peroxide at a concentration of 2.5%.
-
Perolite Cleansers with various concentrations (1%, 2%, 3%).
If you need more powerful treatment to reduce or eliminate comedones, the doctor may prescribe a product containing an antibiotic. This is because bacteria actively multiply in clogged pores.
In this case, Perolite Plus Soap with benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin as a cleansing agent would be appropriate.
Preventing the appearance of comedones
Several steps you can take to prevent the appearance of comedones in the future:
1. Clean face. Use a gentle cleanser twice a day. After sweating, be sure to rinse your face.
2. Do not irritate the skin. Avoid abrasive products. Use warm, not hot, water for washing your face. Do not scrub the skin and use your fingers to wash your face instead of a sponge or cloth.
3. Regularly cleanse your hair. Caring for your hair and scalp can prevent breakouts near the hairline or on the scalp. This can help prevent the proliferation of bacteria and excessive sebum production.
4. Do not touch your skin. Do not try to pop or remove pimples on your own. This can worsen their condition or cause scarring. By touching them, you may spread bacteria from your fingers and lead to infections.
5. Watch your diet. Avoid excessive amounts of dairy products and simple carbohydrates in your diet, such as white bread, white cereals, white rice, and other refined wheat, as well as unhealthy foods - sugary, fatty, and spicy products.
Remember that proper skin care can help prevent the appearance of comedones and other types of acne. Consult your doctor if you have questions about treating acne or comedones.
