Skin during pregnancy and safe use of topical agents

blog-img

Most pregnant women experience certain skin changes during pregnancy, including physiological or hormonal changes, worsening of existing skin conditions, or the appearance of new dermatoses. Most pregnant women are significantly concerned about the availability of treatment options with good safety profiles, especially for skin and hair care, to maintain their appearance and health. Although most treatment methods are recommended for use after childbirth, there are some alternatives for preventing and treating skin lesions during pregnancy.

In this article, we will explore the components and products of the Elegant Group portfolio that are generally allowed for use during pregnancy.

Pregnancy and Skin Changes

Most pregnant women often experience some skin changes, including physiological (hormonal) changes, worsening of existing dermatoses, and specific dermatoses during pregnancy that require special care and treatment. All these conditions are related to changes in hormones, blood vessels, metabolism, and immunological conditions during pregnancy.

One notable physiological change during pregnancy is the increase in androgens, which causes the progression or worsening of acne vulgaris, as well as increased hair growth on the body. A study by Urasaki M. “Skin Physiological Alterations in Pregnant Women of Public System Health” showed that 91.1 percent of pregnant women developed pregnancy-related skin lesions, and approximately 67.2 percent of skin changes affected their confidence and health.

The most common issue during pregnancy is skin hyperpigmentation, followed by vascular changes, stretch marks, and acne vulgaris. Therefore, considering the consequences of these conditions, treatment or supportive methods even in pregnant women should continue, but the safety of the components contained in the products must be taken into account.

Safe Components for Treating Skin Conditions During Pregnancy

In general, there are certain concerns regarding safe skincare products for pregnant women. Therefore, women who are expecting often ask dermatologists about the safety of topical and systemic medications. Clinical trials and systematic reviews regarding the safety profile of topical medications during pregnancy are very limited due to ethical standards.

Although most treatment methods are recommended for use only after childbirth, there are some alternative methods for preventing and treating skin lesions during pregnancy.

Hyperpigmentation is the most common skin lesion that troubles many pregnant women and is most often seen in darker skin types. Hyperpigmentation usually improves after childbirth, but it often persists and causes treatment issues. A permitted safe component for removing spots is azelaic acid, which can be found in the form of a gel, cream, and lotion, making it convenient for use on large areas of skin.
Among the products of Elegant Group, azelaic acid is included in the Azelogy line. For the treatment of hyperpigmentation, your doctor may prescribe:

  • lotion Azelogy 5% or 10%,

  • or gel Azelogy 10% or 15%,

  • or cream Azelogy 20%

Acne Vulgaris

When treating acne, it is advisable to avoid the use of topical retinoids during pregnancy. It is better to prefer acids such as salicylic acid, which is found throughout the Clozac line, or azelaic acid - products from Azelogy.

Additionally, another safe component for treating acne in pregnant women can be - pure benzoyl peroxide. This component is found in:

  • the cleansing product Perolite Face Wash (1%, 2%, 3%),

  • in soap Perolite (2.5%),

  • in gels Perolite 2.5% and Perolite 5%.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are another common skin issue among women during pregnancy and after childbirth. To improve skin condition, eliminate or significantly reduce visible defects, we recommend using the stretch mark cream Femilite.

Don't Neglect Sun Protection

We recommend not forgetting about daily application of a high SPF product. For example, like in Uveelite 50+. The product contains UVA and UVB filters with the highest level of sun protection.

To enjoy your pregnancy and this special time, don’t hesitate to consult a dermatologist and definitely start taking care of your body, which will soon bring new life.

With the first warm days, you want to spend more time in the sun. The spring sun rays seem soft and safe, but during this period, the skin is particularly vulnerable after winter. A weakened protective barrier and dryness make it more sensitive to ultraviolet light. Therefore, sun protection in spring is just as important as in summer.
